Can Zepbound help with obstructive sleep apnea?

Some weight-loss medicines now have indications extending beyond weight management. In December 2024, the FDA approved Zepbound for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. That does not mean everyone who snores needs this medicine.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. Breathing interruptions can cause poor sleep and other health risks. Diagnosis usually involves evaluation by a clinician and sleep testing.

Who did the FDA approval cover?

The approval applies to adults with obesity and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. It is an additional indication for Zepbound, used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

What did the clinical trials test?

The FDA reviewed two randomized, placebo-controlled trials in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea and obesity. Trials assessed breathing interruptions and related measures over 52 weeks, including groups who did and did not use positive airway pressure therapy.

Can you stop CPAP if you start the medicine?

Not without medical direction. Existing sleep-apnea treatment may still be necessary. A clinician should assess symptoms, repeat testing needs, and whether other therapies should continue.

What about insurance coverage?

Treatment eligibility, diagnosis documentation, prior authorization and covered indications vary by plan. Approval for a medical indication does not guarantee that every insurance contract covers a specific device or formulation.

The bottom line

Zepbound has an FDA-approved indication for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity, but treatment decisions still require a sleep-care evaluation.
