Where should you inject Wegovy or Zepbound, and should you rotate sites?
A weekly injection is straightforward only once you know the correct medicine, pen or vial and technique. Patients often ask whether they should inject into the abdomen, thigh or arm—and whether using the same area repeatedly is acceptable.
Which body areas are listed?
FDA instructions for Zepbound describe subcutaneous injection in the abdomen or thigh; another person may give an injection in the back of the upper arm. Wegovy injection instructions also identify approved subcutaneous body sites. Follow the Instructions for Use for the exact device.
What does rotating sites mean?
Move to a different injection site with each weekly dose. You may use the same general body area, but avoid injecting into exactly the same spot. Follow directions about avoiding damaged, bruised, tender or scarred skin.
Does the body site change the prescribed dose?
No. The labeled dose comes from the medicine and device. Never try to change the dose by injecting into a different area or by manipulating a pen outside its instructions.
What if the device is unfamiliar?
Different presentations can require different handling. Ask a pharmacist to demonstrate the specific pen or syringe before the first injection. Use the matching manufacturer's Instructions for Use.
What if the injection is painful or incomplete?
Don't automatically give a second dose after a suspected incomplete injection. Contact your pharmacist, care team or manufacturer for device-specific advice; taking another full dose could result in excess medication.
The bottom line
Correct technique depends on your particular device. Rotate injection sites and seek instruction instead of guessing after a device problem.
